AN INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE OF ALTERNATIVE PORTS OF ENTRY FOR LATIN AMERICAN FRUIT AND VEGETABLE IMPORTS AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Lambert, Bruce; Picha, David H..
Trade is a venue for economic development and diversification. U.S. concerns focus on exports. However, imports of counter-seasonal produce items stimulate port activity. At ports used for these products, a marketing infrastructure develops that can be useful to the domestic produce industry. Most imported produce enters at Miami or along the Delaware River. Use of Gulf of Mexico ports could shorten transportation distance for Latin American product destined for Southern and Midwestern U.S. markets. This paper reports results of a survey designed to reveal industry perceptions of the physical and marketing infrastructure, and marketing advantages and constraints, offered by selected Gulf ports.

ANALYZING LINKAGES BETWEEN NURSERY FARM GROWTH RATES, STRUCTURAL VARIABLES, AND FIRM CHARACTERISTICS AgEcon
Navajas, Roberto; Hinson, Roger A.; Pinel, Raul A..
Production of ornamental plants is one of agriculture's successes. However, concentration of production and retailing is occurring, bringing additional competitive pressure. An econometric model is used to explain growth rate using a cross-sectional data set from 2001, self-reported growth rates for nursery firms, and firm and operator characteristics.

Consumer Preferences for Locally Produced Strawberries AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Bruchhaus, Michael N..
Consumers were surveyed to understand preference in an effort to stabilize acreage and market share in a minor strawberry production area. Preferred attributes were identified using conjoint analysis. Local product was highest in overall relative importance, followed by price, pesticide strategy, and container. Cluster analysis identified groups with similar demographics. For two groups, local product was 77 percent and 67 percent of relative importance; for another group, price was about 75 percent of importance; while the final group was balanced across three attributes. Alignment with consumer preferences and with strategies of local retailers and wholesalers lead to suggested tactics to support local product.

COST OF AND APPROACHES TO HACCP IMPLEMENTATION: AN OYSTER INDUSTRY EXAMPLE AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Whitley, Daniel B..
As the result of highly visible events that involve food safety (some involving oyster consumption), HACCP programs have been developed to help assure safety. A protocol for seafood products, developed cooperatively by regulators and industry, is in place. The cost of such programs has not been documented. This research used the case-study approach to identify alternative HACCP systems and to estimate the implementation and operating costs of those systems in the oyster-processing industry.

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF THE GREEN INDUSTRY TO LOUISIANA'S ECONOMY AgEcon
Hughes, David W.; Hinson, Roger A..
The green industry comprises the production and marketing of woody ornamentals, greenhouse, and turfgrass-related products, and landscape and horticultural services. The industry is market oriented with prospects for future growth. Many state trade organizations have become interested in better measurement of the industry's economic contribution. The contribution of major industry sectors to the Louisiana economy are quantified with a state input-output model. Also presented are study results that are mainly based on readily available data sources. Results suggest that the state industry made a strong contribution to economic activity comparable in size to that of other major agricultural commodities.

EVALUATION OF SELECTED FRESH VEGETABLE TERMINAL MARKETS: A STOCHASTIC DOMINANCE APPROACH AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Lee, John G.; Huh, Mooyul.
Vegetable production can offer a high-valued cash crop alternative. While returns may be high, vegetables are perceived to have more risk than conventional row crops. This study used stochastic dominance analysis to evaluate terminal market price risk for four vegetable crops across five market locations. Results from the analysis identify differences in efficient market selection depending on the form which price risk follows. While vegetables as a whole are considered risky, substantial differences in the type of terminal market price variability existed between the commodities.

IMPACT OF NOMINAL AND REAL PRICE CHANGES ON THE SWEET POTATO PACK IN LOUISIANA AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A..
Changes in consumer demand have led to a prolonged decline in per capita consumption of sweet potatoes, both fresh and processed form. With a product line of various container sizes and styles, processors may respond to changes by altering product line composition to enhance sales. Changes in quantity of individual products were contrasted to changes in nominal and real prices. Quantities were not consistently related to real prices in an inverse manner, though recent increases in total production of canned sweet potatoes have occurred while real price has decreased.

IMPACT OF SOCIOECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS ON ATTITUDES TOWARD FOOD IRRADIATION AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Harrison, R. Wes; Andrews, Linda.
Irradiation of food products is one of several techniques that reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Despite its advantages, the technique has been used sparingly because consumers are wary about this technology. A logit model is used to evaluate the impacts of demographic factors on attitudes toward purchasing foods that have been irradiated and toward paying more for irradiated foods. An important finding of this study is that consumers who are familiar with irradiation are significantly more likely to buy and pay more for irradiated products than those who have never heard of irradiation. This implies that educational programs aimed at informing consumers about the benefits of irradiation can work.

Marketing Sweetpotatoes to the United Kingdom AgEcon
Hinson, Roger A.; Picha, David H..
The sweet potato, though nutritious and healthful, has languished as measured by per capita consumption. Value-adding products have been developed, but have not been successful in expanding consumption and acceptance. Specialty pack exports to the United Kingdom, with expansion to continental Europe, are a potential market for appropriately packaged product.
